New Scene Cuts from Dive in Wonderland by P.A.WORKS Pay Homage to the Original Alice in Wonderland
P.A.WORKS' latest anime film Dive in Wonderland (JP title: 不思議の国でアリスと, Fushigi no Kuni de Alice to) reimagines the classic tale of Alice in Wonderlandd by Lewis Carroll. Directed by Toshiya Shinohara and written by Yuko Kakihara, the film is scheduled to premiere in Japan on August 29. In celebration of “Alice Day” on July 4—a date associated with the day Carroll first told the story of Alice—seven new scene cuts have been released, each paying homage to the original story.
The newly unveiled images include Alice drinking from a bottle labeled “Drink Me” and shrinking in size, nibbling on a “Eat Me” cake while sitting on Rise’s shoulder, and holding hands with Rise as they step into an extraordinary world. Another standout features the Queen of Hearts, referencing some of the most iconic moments from the original book. These visuals blend classic motifs with a refreshed art style, expressing a “Wonderland” where the abnormal is normal.
Director Shinohara reflects on why the original Alice in Wonderland continues to resonate across generations:
“Its strong characters and nonsensical world make it unforgettable. The story has no clear structure and is filled with uncertainty, which in turn provides a vast creative space. That openness gives creators room to explore new perspectives. I think that’s a big part of why it’s so beloved even today.”
The film follows Rise Azumino, a college student who feels lost and stuck in her job hunt. She encounters Alice in a world where strangeness is the norm. Through their journey, Rise confronts herself and gradually begins to change. Their mysterious encounters challenge existing values and spark small but meaningful transformations within both girls.
