The Pokémon franchise will release a new official encyclopedia titled Pokémon Ecology Encyclopedia on June 18, 2025, offering an in-depth exploration of how Pokémon live in the wild. Pre-orders began today, April 21, along with the launch of a dedicated teaser site.

Over 1,000 Pokémon Analyzed from a Biological Perspective

Unlike traditional Pokédex entries, this encyclopedia focuses on the ecology of wild Pokémon. How do they eat, sleep, migrate, and interact with others? The book examines over 1,000 Pokémon from multiple angles—such as body structure, behavior, relationships with other species, and movement abilities—offering insights into differences, similarities, patterns, and connections among them.

The book also provides scientifically informed commentary by Dr. Yoshinari Yonehara, who holds a PhD in Agricultural Science and is currently employed at The Pokémon Company. He breaks down each Pokémon’s lifestyle using academic insight in an easy-to-understand way, based on detailed observations and analyses of in-universe data.

Full-Color Illustrations by a Fellow Animal Ecology Expert

In order to visualize these ecological features, every Pokémon is depicted with a brand-new, full-color illustration. The illustrations were created by Chihiro Kinoshita, an accomplished illustrator known for drawing realistic animal behaviors in scientific books.

Both Yonehara and Kinoshita earned their doctorates from the Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences at the University of Tokyo, where they studied animal behavior and ecology. Their academic backgrounds lend scientific credibility to this innovative look into Pokémon biology.

While today’s announcement confirmed the release date and began pre-orders, more details on the content of the book will be shared in future updates.
