Surprise Announcement: Live-Action Legend of Zelda Movie Coming in 2027
On March 28, Nintendo announced that a live-action film based on its blockbuster video game franchise The Legend of Zelda will hit theaters on March 26, 2027.

The surprise reveal sparked a flurry of reactions across social media, with fans exclaiming, “I’m shocked!” and “A live-action Zelda!? I need to see footage already!” Others commented on the distant release date, saying, “It’s further off than I expected.”
The film will be co-produced by Shigeru Miyamoto, Representative Director and Fellow at Nintendo, and Avi Arad, founder of Arad Productions Inc. and producer of numerous box office hits.
Production will be handled jointly by Nintendo and Arad Productions Inc., with direction by Wes Ball. Nintendo will fund more than 50% of the movie’s production budget, while Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc. will serve as co-financier and handle worldwide distribution.
In a statement about the project, Nintendo emphasized its strategy of expanding its intellectual properties beyond traditional gaming platforms: “By producing visual adaptations of Nintendo IPs ourselves, we are creating opportunities for people around the world to experience Nintendo’s entertainment in ways beyond dedicated gaming consoles.”
