The theatrical pre-release edition of the latest Gundam anime series, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning-, which premiered on January 17, has officially recorded impressive commercial success. According to new data released on its 66th day in theaters, the film has earned 3,296,499,200 yen (approx. $21.98 million USD at ¥150/$) and drawn a total of 2,000,380 viewers.

This performance has propelled GQuuuuuuX past the box office total of Mobile Suit Gundam III: Encounters in Space (1982, over 2.3 billion yen), making it the second-highest-grossing Gundam film of all time. It now ranks just behind Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM (2024), which holds the top spot with 5.38 billion yen (approx. $35.87 million USD).

A Bold New Chapter in the Gundam Saga

Set in a peaceful space colony, the story follows Amate Yuzuriha, a high school girl whose life changes dramatically after she meets a war refugee named Nyaan. Their encounter drags Amate into the underground world of illegal mobile suit duels known as Clan Battles. Taking the entry name Machu, Amate pilots the mysterious GQuuuuuuX, facing relentless battles while being pursued by both the Space Army and the police. Her fate intertwines with a mysterious Gundam and its pilot, the enigmatic boy Shuji, as a new era dawns across the galaxy.

The anime is co-produced by Studio Khara, renowned for the Evangelion franchise, and long-time Gundam studio Sunrise. The theatrical version was released ahead of the TV broadcast and features a re-edited compilation of key episodes tailored for the big screen.
