On March 23, a special stage greeting event was held in Tokyo to mark the finale of the theatrical pre-release version Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning-, ahead of the TV broadcast of the new series Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX. In a surprise appearance via video message, theme song artist Kenshi Yonezu expressed his excitement and connection to the project.

The new Gundam series is a groundbreaking collaboration between Studio Khara, known for Evangelion, and Sunrise, the legendary studio behind the Gundam franchise. Directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki (Evangelion: 3.0+1.0), with series composition by Yoji Enokido and mechanical designs by Ikuto Yamashita, the project has already become a box office success, surpassing 3.2 billion yen in revenue.

The TV series will begin airing nationwide in Japan via Nippon TV's 30-station network starting April 8.

Story Overview: Girls, Gundams, and Galactic Battles

Set in a space colony, the story follows Amate Yuzuriha, a high school girl whose encounter with a mysterious girl named Nyaan draws her into the world of illegal mobile suit duels known as Clan Battles. Taking on the alias Machu, Amate pilots GQuuuuuuX and dives into intense combat. Simultaneously, a mysterious Gundam and its young pilot Shuji—wanted by both the Space Army and the police—cross paths with her as the universe edges into a new era.

Yonezu’s Creative Process Behind “Plazma”

In his video message, Yonezu shared:
“While creating Plazma, I was given access to the full storyboard of the TV series. It had a profound impact on me. The story runs on two axes: the world of Machu and Nyaan, and another grand narrative of ‘what ifs.’ I aimed to capture both the personal journey of children breaking out of their small world and stepping into a vast one. That duality inspired the development of this song.”

He added, “Gundam has always been very familiar to me, so it’s an incredible honor to be involved in this project through the theme song. I hope both the anime and Plazma are enjoyed by many.”
