A Grand Space Opera with a Deeply Engaging Story
Moonrise brings together the humanistic character designs of Arakawa, Ubukata’s masterful storytelling in the sci-fi genre (a novel adaptation is also planned), and Koizuka’s cinematic expertise—best known for directing Attack on Titan Seasons 2 and 3. All of this is brought to life by the visually stunning animation of WIT STUDIO, known for works like SPY×FAMILY.

The story is set in the 2XXX AD, where humanity has established a "loosely unified world government." Society thrives under the guidance of the global AI network Sapientia, ensuring peace through rational decision-making. However, the AI-led lunar colonization plan, which exiles criminals and hazardous materials to the Moon, has created a stark disparity between Earth’s prosperity and the Moon’s impoverished population, leading to rising tensions and the risk of war.
The protagonist, Jacob "Jack" Shadow (voiced by Chiaki Kobayashi), is caught in a terrorist attack and loses his family at the hands of the Moon’s rebel army, who seek liberation from Earth’s control. Swearing revenge, Jack joins the Earth military as an investigator and embarks on a mission to the Moon. However, the leader of the rebels turns out to be an unexpected figure...
As Earth’s civilians and the Moon’s resistance fighters prepare for an epic clash, Jack and his childhood friend Phil hold the key to the conflict’s resolution. Moonrise tells a grand tale of destiny, rebellion, and the tragic battles between Earth and Moon—leading to an unforeseeable conclusion.

Comments from the Production Team & Cast
Director Masashi Koizuka reflected on the creative process, stating, "This is WIT STUDIO’s first space opera. It’s also our team’s first original production with Netflix, filled with on-site passion and energy." He added, "Seeing the actors bring raw intensity to their performances and watching our staff elevate the visuals beyond expectations has been an incredible experience. I hope audiences enjoy this synergy."
Chiaki Kobayashi, who voices Jack, shared his excitement: "Being an original anime, much of the story remains shrouded in mystery. However, the breathtaking action sequences and high-speed battles are major highlights. The cast gave it their all, screaming and fighting from morning till night. I hope viewers can feel the intensity we put into this work."
Kobayashi is also set to appear at AnimeJapan 2025, Japan’s largest anime event, on March 22 at the Netflix Special Stage to represent Moonrise.
Meanwhile, Yuto Uemura, who plays Phil, reflected on the recording sessions: "The long recording process created a thrilling atmosphere, and the dynamic interactions were a highlight. The numerous battle scenes make this a particularly intense work, and Phil struggles amidst the chaos. Please watch and experience each character’s inner conflicts. I can’t wait for everyone to see it!"
