Donkey Kong Country Opens at USJ: Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto Highlights Unique Details
Universal Studios Japan (USJ) has unveiled its latest attraction, "Donkey Kong Country," with a grand opening set for December 11. At the pre-opening event held on December 10, Nintendo’s legendary game designer and Representative Director Fellow, Shigeru Miyamoto, shared insights about the new area, which expands the "Super Nintendo World" introduced in 2021.
A World Built for Fans of Donkey Kong
Miyamoto expressed excitement during his speech, noting the journey of bringing Donkey Kong from its arcade debut in 1981 to becoming a globally beloved franchise. “Finally, we’ve made it a reality here at Universal Studios Japan. It’s so real, and I’m deeply moved,” he said.
The area recreates the lush jungle environment from the games, featuring iconic elements like the “Golden Temple” and immersive night-time lighting. Miyamoto described how the area contrasts with the vibrant Mario-themed zone, offering visitors a dynamic experience that changes from day to night.

Donkey Kong’s Crazy Cart
A high-energy ride that mimics the unpredictable action of the games. Riders will leap from barrels, navigate rugged courses, dodge obstacles, and soar through the jungle.
Donkey Kong’s Treehouse
Guests can meet Donkey Kong himself for a photo op and interactive experience.
Rambi’s Jungle Conga
A rhythm game where visitors can play bongos to summon Rambi the rhinoceros, one of Donkey Kong’s animal friends.
Unique Dining and Shops
Jungle Beat Shake: Barrel-shaped desserts for a sweet adventure.
Funky Kong’s Flying & Buy: A shop run by Funky Kong, offering themed merchandise.
Miyamoto’s Eye for Detail
During his speech, Miyamoto encouraged guests to notice the finer details. “Can you hear the jungle beats playing? The plants here are real, and they’ll bloom with the seasons. This jungle will grow over time, and I hope you’ll explore it with your own feet,” he said, expressing admiration for the craftsmanship and creativity behind the area.
