Cancellation of "Yuri!!! on ICE Movie" Leaves Toshiyuki Toyonaga Disappointed; Extends Thanks to All Involved

The production of the anime movie "Yuri!!! on ICE Movie: ICE ADOLESCENCE" has been canceled, as announced on the official website on the 19th. The film, initially slated for a 2019 release, had been postponed, and following the cancellation, Toshiyuki Toyonaga, who voices the protagonist Yuuri Katsuki, shared his feelings on his X account on the 20th.

Toyonaga wrote on X, "I thought about what to say a lot, but the more I think about it, the simpler the answer becomes. It can't be helped. It's disappointing. I feel powerless."

He concluded his post with, "The last words that remain are 'thank you.' To everyone who supported us, who tried their best to produce the work, who bravely decided to announce this, to everyone involved—thank you. See you again!!"

Additionally, on the 19th, Junichi Suwabe, who voices the main character Victor Nikiforov, also updated his X account expressing his disappointment, "Fans all over the world have been looking forward to this work, so I am also very disappointed."

He added, "I hope that someday, in some form, the world where Victor and the others live can be depicted again... Meanwhile, let’s revisit the beautifully concluded TV series. Memories do not fade."

The story, set in the world of men's figure skating, was originally broadcast as a TV anime in October 2016. It follows Yuuri Katsuki, a figure skater on the verge of giving up, and Victor Nikiforov, a five-time world champion who appears before him and offers to coach, as they aim for the gold medal at the Grand Prix Final.

The TV series gained popularity as the world's first serious figure skating anime, and a completely new movie was announced to be in production. Although scheduled for release in 2019, the release was postponed in September of the same year "to significantly enhance the quality of the film."

After the release of a 5th-anniversary illustration for the TV series in 2022, there was no further information on the movie, leading to concerns and speculation among fans about its status.

With the official announcement of the movie's cancellation on the 19th, fans expressed their disappointment and shock, with comments such as "I was looking forward to it... what a shame," "It’s surprising that such a popular work is canceled," "It’s so sad, I feel like I could die," "Announcing the cancellation is the honest thing to do," and "Honestly, I was prepared, but it still hurts to hear it officially."
