What is Darwin’s Incident About?
With the tagline, “Why are humans the only ones considered special?” Darwin’s Incident is a gripping drama that challenges humanity’s deepest social issues, such as terrorism and discrimination. The story explores these themes through the perspective of Charlie, a "Humanzee"—half human, half chimpanzee—born under extraordinary circumstances.
The plot begins when a terrorist group, the Animal Liberation Alliance (ALA), raids a bioresearch lab, rescuing a pregnant chimpanzee. This chimpanzee gives birth to Charlie, a humanzee raised for 15 years in a human household. As Charlie enters high school, he befriends the reserved yet brilliant Lucy. However, Charlie’s unique existence soon draws the attention of the ALA, threatening to upend his life.
Serialized in Monthly Afternoon since June 2020, the manga has sold over 1.6 million copies and received accolades, including:
Manga Taisho 2022: Grand Prize
25th Japan Media Arts Festival: Excellence Award (Manga Division)
Ranked #2 in 2022’s Editor-Recommended Comics
Recognition at France’s 50th Angoulême International Comics Festival.
The series has gained a loyal fanbase both in Japan and abroad, making its anime debut even more anticipated.
