Legendary Anime Obochamakun Returns with New Series for India — "Sonna Banana!" After 30 Years

The legendary anime series Obochamakun, based on Yoshinori Kobayashi’s manga originally serialized in Monthly CoroCoro Comic (Shogakukan) and aired from 1989 to 1992 on TV Asahi, is making an international comeback — specifically in India. Due to a surge in popularity on Indian kids' channels, TV Asahi has partnered with Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI) to co-produce a brand-new series (22-minute episodes x 26 and 11-minute episodes x 52), bringing Obochamakun back to life for a new generation.

The anime follows the over-the-top adventures of Chama Obou, heir to the Obou Conglomerate, who transfers to an elite school filled with Japan’s wealthy children. Known for his extravagant behavior and his hilarious "Chama language," including catchphrases like "Ohayo-gurt!" and "Sonna Banana!" the character captured hearts with his outrageous, unique charm.

After nearly 30 years, Obochamakun has gained a new audience in India, where fans on the children’s channel SONY YAY! have requested more episodes. With Kobayashi’s approval, TV Asahi and SPNI launched this major project. The new series, expected to air next year across India, will be written by Shin-Ei Animation, a subsidiary of TV Asahi and the studio behind the original Japanese version. Animation production will be handled in India, allowing both countries to combine their creative talents in fresh, collaborative episodes.

A world premiere of select episodes was held on October 21 at MIPCOM 2024 in Cannes, France, showcasing scenes from the new series, followed by a panel discussion with SPNI, TV Asahi, and Green Gold Animation, the Indian studio behind the production.
