Like a Dragon: Yakuza Drama – Trailer, Cast, and Visuals Unveiled for Amazon Original Series [15 Photos]
The full trailer, new key visual, and 15 scene stills for the Amazon Original drama Like a Dragon: Yakuza – Beyond the Game (6 episodes total), starring Ryōma Takeuchi, have been revealed, along with additional cast announcements. The drama will stream exclusively on Prime Video in two batches: the first three episodes on October 25, and the final three on November 1. A subscription is required to watch the series.
Based on Sega’s hit game series Yakuza (Like a Dragon), this original script adaptation takes place in the entertainment district of Kamurocho, just like the games. It follows the lives of Kazuma Kiryu (played by Takeuchi) and Akira Nishikiyama (Kento Kaku) as they navigate the yakuza world, intertwining two timelines—1995 and 2005—in a gripping crime suspense action series.
In 1995, Kiryu, Nishikiyama, Yumi Sawamura, and Nishikiyama’s sister Miho, having lost their parents at a young age, live together at the "Sunflower" orphanage, run by Shintarō Kazama, the orphanage director. Yearning to break free from their constrained lives, Kiryu and his friends plan an attack on a game center.
However, the game center was under the control of the Dojima Clan, a powerful yakuza organization in Kamurocho. After the incident, Kiryu is forced to fight in an underground ring, while Yumi and Miho are forced to work at Club Serena under the control of the Dojima Clan. Recognized by the Dojima Clan leader, Kiryu and Nishikiyama are inducted into the clan, while Nishikiyama's attempt to cut off his own pinky finger earns him respect. Kazama, who had once been a senior member of the Dojima Clan and knew the dark side of the yakuza, wished for the four to lead normal lives, but they inevitably fall deeper into the underworld.
Fast forward 10 years to 2005, Nishikiyama has risen through the ranks of the Tojo Clan, while Yumi becomes the manager of New Serena, wielding significant power from within the Millennium Tower. However, a shocking incident occurs when Yumi’s estranged sister Aiko, along with her lover Ōishi, steals 10 billion yen in secret funds from the Ōmi Alliance, the largest yakuza organization in Japan, led by President Gōda, and based in Kansai. This incident puts Yumi and Nishikiyama under suspicion by the Ōmi Alliance, setting the stage for a confrontation between the Tojo Clan and the Ōmi Alliance.
To prevent a war between the two major yakuza organizations, the upper ranks of the police force grant Kiryu a special pardon and release him from prison to infiltrate the yakuza. Initially refusing to re-enter the criminal world, Kiryu decides to return to Kamurocho when he learns that Yumi and Nishikiyama are in danger. As the relationships between Kiryu, Nishikiyama, and Yumi have deteriorated over the 10 years, they are drawn into a new whirlwind of fate. Kiryu resolves to face a bloody battle to protect his "family."
Yūmi Sawamura, Kiryu and Nishikiyama’s childhood friend and a caring figure, is portrayed by Yūmi Kawai, who gained widespread attention for her role in An Inappropriate Affair. Hinano Nakayama plays the lively and cheerful Miho Nishikiyama, Akira's younger sister.
Commenting on her role, Kawai said, “Being part of a project based on a game loved worldwide and experiencing such a grand production scale was a first for me. I took it on as a challenge, and I hope the wide audience will enjoy it.”
Toshiaki Karasawa plays Shintarō Kazama, who runs the orphanage and acts as a father figure to Kiryu and his friends. Karasawa commented, "I never imagined I would be part of the Yakuza world, so I was surprised. Kazama is an important figure for Kiryu and his friends, and I hope you’ll follow the drama's epic journey."
The film also features a major plot involving 10 billion yen, with Aiko, Yumi’s estranged sister, played by Mizuki Morita. Kōichi Satō plays Sera, the head of the Tojo Clan, who is chasing after the culprits. Subaru Shibutani portrays Detective Date, a former officer determined to stop the looming yakuza war in Kamurocho.
Additionally, Saki Takaoka plays Reina, the manager of Club Serena where Yumi worked in 1995. Ryūdō Uzaki portrays Gōda Jin, the leader of the Ōmi Alliance, while Shōhei Uno plays Tsuruta Kōji, another Ōmi Alliance figure. Masaya Katō portrays Dojima, the leader of the Dojima Clan in 1995. Tomoya Maeno takes on the role of "The Florist of Sai," an ex-police officer turned skilled informant.
