Kyoto Animation Announces Two New Anime Projects for Next Year: First Full Original Series in Six Years, 'CITY THE ANIMATION', & New Movie, 'Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid'
On the 21st, Kyoto Animation announced the production of two new anime titles. The studio will air its first full original TV anime in six years, CITY THE ANIMATION, in 2025. In addition, a new movie in the Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid series, Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid: The Dragon Who Gets Lonely (Tentative title), is set to be released in 2025.
CITY THE ANIMATION is based on the Morning (Kodansha) serialized manga CITY, written by Keiichi Arawi, which ran from 2016 to 2021. This girls' run comedy depicts the lives of slightly unusual residents in an otherwise ordinary “CITY,” focusing on the diverse cast of characters including broke college student Midori Nagumo, Ni-kura, and Wako.
In the anime, Taichi Ishidate, known for directing Beyond the Boundary and Violet Evergarden, will serve as the director. The cast of the three characters revealed in the teaser visual includes Mikako Komatsu as Midori Nagumo, Aki Toyosaki as Ni-kura, and Yui Ishikawa as Wako Izumi. The teaser PV, which was also released, showcases fun and charming visuals that reflect the unique atmosphere of the series.
Meanwhile, Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid is a heartwarming home comedy that revolves around the interspecies interactions between humans and dragons, particularly focusing on Tohru, a dragon girl who ends up working as a maid for Miss Kobayashi. The first season of the TV anime aired in 2017, followed by the second season in 2021. The new movie will be directed by Tatsuya Ishihara, who commented, "Kanna, Kobayashi, and Tohru will take the action from the TV screen to the big screen, and cause chaos as they run wild!"
The cast will include Mutsumi Tamura reprising her role as Miss Kobayashi, Yuki Kuwahara as Tohru, and Maria Naganawa as Kanna. In the PV and visual that were released, Kanna's line, "Goodbye, Kobayashi," adds a mysterious element, suggesting a shift from the familiar atmosphere of the previous Dragon Maid installments.
Kyoto Animation, known for producing hits such as Violet Evergarden, the Tsurune series, the Free! series, and the Sound! Euphonium series, has continued to create many successful works in recent years. At the new project announcement event held that day, the company stated, "Kyoto Animation will continue to deliver works filled with emotions to audiences around the world in 2025."
Comments from the Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid: The Dragon Who Gets Lonely Team
Director: Tatsuya Ishihara
This is Tatsuya Ishihara from Kyoto Animation! I was the director for the Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid S TV anime. This time, Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid is—believe it or not—becoming a feature-length film! Some of you may have already guessed, but this story is all about Kanna, and it's one you've been wanting to see on the big screen! With action, emotions, and a long, dramatic tale, Dragon Maid is coming to theaters. Kanna, Kobayashi, and Tohru will be leaping off the TV and tearing up the big screen! We're working hard to bring you something amazing, so stay tuned!
Mutsumi Tamura (Voice of Miss Kobayashi)
Making anime is tough, and a third season? I thought it might be difficult... I was thinking, "Maybe the fans will just keep waiting forever," and then, out of nowhere, it’s a Dragon Maid movie! I was completely shocked! (laughs) The teaser visual looks really serious...! Is this not going to be the usual heartwarming slice of life? Why is Kanna saying goodbye to Kobayashi!? What does it mean!!? My head was spinning, but for those of you with sharp intuition... well, you probably already know what’s up, right? I can’t wait to read the script, and I’m sure you’re all excited for the release too!
Yuki Kuwahara (Voice of Tohru)
“Humans! I’ve come to see you again!!” I could immediately picture Tohru's face when I thought of that line. From intense battle scenes to the delicate facial expressions of the characters, Dragon Maid always reveals something new with every viewing, as it's crafted with such meticulous detail. I’ve always wanted to see it on the big screen, and now that dream is coming true. I’m so happy to get to meet everyone again! I’ll turn this joy into power and give it my all as Tohru. Please look forward to it!
Maria Naganawa (Voice of Kanna)
I’m thrilled to meet the characters in action again, see the production staff, and reunite with the cast! I'm also excited to be given the opportunity to express even more of Kanna's charm. I’ll work hard to show even more of Kanna’s depth, and I hope you'll look forward to it!
