A Certain Item of Dark Side Anime Reveals Main PV and Theme Songs

The A Certain series is a popular entertainment novel franchise centered on A Certain Magical Index, which has surpassed 31 million copies in circulation. A Certain Item of Dark Side tells the story of girls living in the shadows of Academy City.

The PV is set in Academy City, a city with a total population of 2.3 million, around 80 percent of whom are students. Behind its peaceful surface exists ITEM, an elite unit within the Dark Side that takes on dirty work that can never be made public.

The members of ITEM infiltrate a research facility in the massive Academy City, where supernatural abilities that bend the laws of the world are developed. The footage shows Shizuri Mugino, voiced by Ami Koshimizu, delivering a powerful punch, Frenda Seivelun, voiced by Maaya Uchida, at the scene of an explosion, and the bodies of related personnel lying on the ground.

In contrast to the brutality of the scene, the members of ITEM exchange light and casual conversation that feels almost like office workers chatting. Mugino says, “Huh? Takitsubo, don’t you smell something nice?” Rikou Takitsubo, voiced by Aya Suzaki, replies, “Hm? Oh, maybe it is the sample body cream I got at the spa earlier.” Saiai Kinuhata, voiced by Chinatsu Akasaki, responds, “Could you please stop having such a super office lady on holiday kind of conversation?”

“I am joining the people who will accept me as their new comrade, ITEM.” These words are anxiously spoken by Chōbi Hanano, voiced by Hana Hishikawa, the fifth member of ITEM. While taking on pitch black assignments that even involve disposing of people and burning away all evidence that must never come to light, Mugino senses trouble ahead and mutters, “Something feels kind of wrong.” With Hanano’s arrival, Mugino and the Dark Side organization around her become caught up in a conspiracy stirring beneath the city.

Comment from East Of Eden

We are East Of Eden, and we will be performing the opening theme for A Certain Item of Dark Side. We feel deeply honored that our first anime tie in is for the long loved A Certain series. “Ghost Sequence” is a song that overlays a tense, heavy sound with the feeling of moving forward while protecting our own version of the present, even amid a harsh reality. As a female group, we hope the song we can create will stay close to the work and add even a little color to its world.

Comment from Kishida Kyodan & The Akeboshi Rockets

I am Kishida of Kishida Kyodan & The Akeboshi Rockets, and we will be performing the ending theme for A Certain Item of Dark Side. Since this is a story about the Dark Side, I thought it needed a song with impact, so it turned out heavy, dark, and aggressive. It may even be the most intense song in the history of Kishida Kyodan. The fact that a song like this came out is probably thanks to Shizuri Mugino. Probably. We worked extremely hard so that we would not create something careless and end up confirmed for that, so we hope you will listen to it.
