Overview

Yuru

Yuru from EP1

Yuru is the protagonist of Daemons of the Shadow Realm (Yomi no Tsugai), a boy with short golden hair and red eyes. At the beginning of the story, he is 17 years old by traditional Japanese counting, which corresponds to 16 years old.

He was born alongside his younger twin sister Asa as part of the “fated twins who divide night and day,” with Yuru representing the “night.” He lived as a hunter in the isolated Higashimura village without knowledge of his destiny.

However, everything changes when a retrieval operation led by the Kagemori family reunites him with his long separated sister Asa. Through this event, Yuru forms a contract with the village guardian Tsugai known as “Left and Right,” and steps into the outside world, a modern society far removed from his previous life.

Appearance and Personality

Yuru

Yuru from EP1

■Appearance
Yuru is a boy characterized by his short golden hair and striking red eyes. During his time in Higashimura, he wore clothing suited for a primitive hunting lifestyle in the mountains.

■Personality
Yuru maintains an unwavering offensive mindset. Even when his life is in danger, he boldly declares that he will neither run nor hide and will defeat all enemies who stand against him.

He is highly rational and does not act on impulse. Instead, he consistently maintains control over his emotions and makes decisions based on objective judgment.

At the same time, he shows deep care and affection for his sister Asa, revealing a warm and compassionate side to his personality.

When confronted with unfamiliar aspects of the modern world, he adapts quickly with a unique mindset, accepting even incomprehensible situations as something to get used to.

However, he also possesses a harsh and pragmatic side. Against those who clearly intend to kill him, he does not hesitate to retaliate and is fully prepared to fight with lethal intent.

Background

Yuru

Yuru's childhood from EP3

Yuru was separated from his parents at a young age when they disappeared, effectively leaving him behind. However, he cherishes the memories of learning hunting from his father and spending time with his mother under the night sky. He continues to wish to hear the truth about their disappearance directly from them.

The name “Yuru” comes from a word in his mother’s native language meaning “night (Yoru).”

In the outside world, he hides his true identity by adopting the surname “Danno,” posing as Dera’s stepchild.

Abilities

Yuru

Yuru from EP2

Yuru is a highly skilled hunter capable of navigating the mountains alone at just 16 years old. His combat abilities are rooted in both physical skill and sharp tactical thinking.

■Archery Skills
During his time as a hunter, Yuru demonstrated master level archery, capable of single handedly taking down mountain pheasants. He can accurately target enemies even when they are concealed in darkness at night.

His strength lies not only in his perfect accuracy but also in his strategic mindset developed through hunting experience. He approaches combat methodically, such as targeting an opponent’s legs first, then disabling their dominant hand to remove options. He also uses poisoned arrowheads to paralyze enemies and positions himself against the full moon to obscure his silhouette and disrupt the enemy’s vision.

His sister Asa describes this way of thinking as having a “serious hunter mentality.”

■Contracted Tsugai: Left and Right

Yuru with Left and Right

Yuru commands the Tsugai known as “Left” and “Right,” who had been revered as guardian deities of the village for over 400 years.

These Tsugai possess overwhelming strength and durability, taking the frontline in battle while Yuru supports them with his hunting techniques. This combination creates a highly coordinated and nearly flawless combat style.

■Latent Ability: “Seal (封,Fuu)”
Yuru has not yet acquired this ability in the story, but its existence and mechanics have been revealed.

Overview
“Seal” is a power that can distort the natural order and forcibly “close” or seal anything in the world. It is the counterpart to the ability “Break,” possessed by his twin sister Asa, which can “open” or release anything.

It is said that Yuru can obtain this power by dying once, forming a contract with the “Seal” Tsugai in Yomotsu Hirasaka, and then being revived. However, resurrection is not guaranteed, and there have been cases in the past where twins failed to return to life.

Confirmed Effects
Although Yuru himself has not yet awakened this power, past examples and partial users have demonstrated its immense capabilities:

・Neutralizing Tsugai
Instantly and forcibly returns Tsugai to their original forms, such as statues, effectively sealing them.

・Agelessness Through Lifespan Sealing
By sealing a living being’s lifespan, it is possible to halt aging, resulting in an immortal state unless killed by external factors.

・Spatial Isolation Barrier
Allows a designated area to be separated from external space and time, creating an isolated barrier.

・Pain Suppression
Can seal the sensation of pain experienced by living beings.

Relationships

Asa

Asa

■Asa
Yuru and Asa are siblings born as the “fated twins who divide night and day,” with Yuru representing the night and Asa the day.

At the beginning of the story, Yuru lives peacefully in the village, believing that the Asa confined in a cell is his real sister, caring for her with affection. However, that peaceful life is shattered when the “real Asa” appears alongside the Kagemori family and attacks the village.

Initially, Yuru harbors strong distrust toward Asa, who claims to be his sister, seeing her as the one responsible for the village’s destruction. However, as they begin to act together, he gradually comes to understand her. He realizes that she is also searching for their missing parents and recalls memories of her trying to protect him during their childhood. Through this, their bond as siblings slowly begins to recover.

At present, they share a cooperative relationship built on a common goal: uncovering the truth behind their parents’ disappearance and the secrets of the village. Yuru deeply cares for Asa’s safety, and Asa likewise values her older brother.

Dera and Hana

Dera and Hana

■Dera
Dera is a guard from Higashimura who helped guide Yuru to the outside world after the village was attacked and now shelters him. Despite their long acquaintance, Yuru remains cautious and does not fully trust Dera, especially given the current unusual circumstances.

■Hana
Hana is a woman who works alongside Dera and helps shelter Yuru in the outside world. As part of a cover story to conceal his identity, Yuru is presented as Hana’s child from a previous relationship, now remarried to Dera. Under this identity, he goes by the name “Yuru Danno.”

Yuru's Mother Nagisa

Yuru’s father, Mine, taught him hunting skills from a young age as well as the importance of mental discipline, emphasizing that a disturbed mind can lead directly to death.

He also has fond memories of his mother nagisa, such as spending time together gazing at the starry sky. Yuru does not harbor resentment toward her.

Although both parents disappeared when he was young, leaving him behind, Yuru does not hate them. Instead, he wishes to meet them again and hear the truth directly from them.

After leaving the village, Yuru continues to fight while being sheltered by Dera and Hana. His goal is to find his missing parents and restore a normal life where the four of them can live together again.

He confronts hostile forces such as extremists from Higashimura and factions from Nishinomura who target him. Using his courage and coordination with Left and Right, he stands his ground against these threats.

Trivia

Name Origin
According to his mother, the name “Yuru” means “night” in the language of her hometown. This detail suggests that she may be from Okinawa.

Character Design
Yuru was intentionally designed as a calm and thoughtful character. In contrast, Edward Elric from Hiromu Arakawa’s previous work Fullmetal Alchemist was known for his quick temper, making Yuru a deliberate departure in personality.
