The original manga, which celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2025 and surpassed 50 million copies in circulation, sparked a major cultural phenomenon. Set in modern day Shinjuku, the previous film depicted the origin story of how Ryo and Kaori became partners. It quickly gained global attention, debuting at No.1 on Netflix’s Weekly Global Top 10 for Non English Films from April 22 to 28, 2024, and ranking in the Top 10 across 32 countries and regions including Japan, France, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Brazil.
Ryo Saeba, the protagonist, operates in Shinjuku, Tokyo, as a top tier sweeper who handles dangerous underworld jobs. While he is known for his weakness for beautiful women, once he accepts a job, he executes it flawlessly with extraordinary marksmanship, physical ability, and a calm, analytical mind.
New Creative Team Aims for a Definitive City Hunter
The sequel will be directed by Keiichiro Shiraki, known for his fast paced direction and intense action sequences. The screenplay is written by Junpei Yamaoka, who focuses on carefully portraying emotional nuances through character relationships. Building on the momentum of the previous film, the new installment aims to further explore and refine the world of City Hunter.
Ryohei Suzuki Comment
“The production of City Hunter 2 has officially been decided. It is only thanks to everyone who loved and supported the previous film that we are able to deliver this new work. Thank you so much.
Once again, I am approaching filming with a strong sense of responsibility and determination, as we are entrusted with Tsukasa Hojo’s original work, which is so important to both him and the fans.
The previous film depicted the beginning story of Ryo and Kaori. In this sequel, we aim to deliver what could be called ‘The City Hunter,’ the most quintessential version of City Hunter.
We hope to create a film that allows not only long time fans but also those unfamiliar with City Hunter to fully experience the charm of the original work. Please look forward to it.”
Original Creator Tsukasa Hojo Comment
“Since some information had already been circulating, some of you may feel like ‘why announce it now?’ but I am truly relieved that we can finally share this officially with everyone.
I recently had the opportunity to visit the filming set, and I was honestly overwhelmed by the extraordinary passion radiating from Ryohei Suzuki and the director.
Above all, Suzuki’s physical transformation is remarkable, and it clearly reflects his dedication to every project he takes on. I believe this will become a truly outstanding work filled with the passion of everyone involved. I am personally very much looking forward to its completion.”
Director Keiichiro Shiraki Comment
“As a boy, I was captivated by City Hunter through manga and anime. More than excitement, I feel the pressure and difficulty of working on such a legendary work.
How can we faithfully bring the world of the original into the Reiwa era without compromising it? It truly feels like threading a needle.
Together with Ryohei Suzuki, who embodies a deep love for the original, we have been holding daily meetings at a family restaurant somewhere in Tokyo.
Our passionate staff is bringing our vision to life one by one. Please look forward to Netflix film City Hunter 2.”
Executive Producer Shinichi Takahashi Comment
“City Hunter is finally back. Following the tremendous response to the previous film, we are extremely happy to deliver the first ever sequel as a Netflix film from Japan.
Filming has already begun, and with deep respect for Tsukasa Hojo’s original work, Ryohei Suzuki, Misato Morita, and the entire cast, along with Director Shiraki and the staff, are approaching this project with even greater passion than before.
I can hardly contain my excitement to see Ryo, Kaori, and the others once again running through the streets of Shinjuku in their uniquely ‘cool yet goofy’ style.
We promise an incredibly exciting entertainment experience not only for fans but also for those discovering City Hunter for the first time.
City Hunter 2 will be the coolest, funniest, and most emotionally moving installment yet. Please look forward to it.”
