Made in Abyss: Awakening Mystery Set for Fall 2026 Release as Part 1 of Theatrical Series, New Footage and Introduction Revealed

Made in Abyss: Awakening Mystery (JP: メイドインアビス 目覚める神秘, Made in Abyss: Mezameru Shinpi), the first installment of the theatrical series continuation of the Made in Abyss anime, has been confirmed for release in fall 2026. Animation production will once again be handled by Kinema Citrus, the studio behind acclaimed titles such as The Rising of the Shield Hero and My Happy Marriage. Alongside the announcement, staff details and an official introduction have also been revealed.

The original manga series, created by Akihito Tsukushi, has surpassed 22 million copies in circulation. The franchise began with the first TV anime season in 2017, followed by the theatrical film Dawn of the Deep Soul in 2020, and the second TV anime season The Golden City of the Scorching Sun in 2022.

Introduction

In a world that has been thoroughly explored, there remains only one untouched frontier: the massive and mysterious pit known as the Abyss. This colossal vertical chasm stretches endlessly downward, inhabited by bizarre creatures and filled with precious relics beyond the capabilities of modern humanity. The enigmatic allure of the Abyss has captivated people and driven them toward adventure.

Those who repeatedly venture into the great pit eventually came to be known as Delvers (Cave Raiders). Riko, an orphan living in the town of Orth built on the edge of the Abyss, dreams of becoming a legendary Cave Raider like her mother and uncovering the secrets hidden within the Abyss.

One day, the discovery of her mother Lyza’s White Whistle prompts Riko to decide to descend into the depths of the Abyss. Reg, a memory-lost robot whom Riko had found, chooses to accompany her in search of his own past.

In the fourth layer of the Abyss, Riko suffers from the deadly poison of the monstrous creature Orb Piercer. She is saved by Nanachi, a Hollows. With Nanachi joining their party, the trio proceeds to the fifth layer, where Bondrewd awaits. There, they meet a girl named Prushka, who was raised by Bondrewd and knows nothing of the outside world. Fascinated by Riko’s tales of adventure, she longs to join them, but is ultimately used in Bondrewd’s experiments.

Prushka later transforms and becomes Riko’s White Whistle, allowing the group to advance to the sixth layer, the Capital of the Unreturned. There, they encounter a village inhabited by Hollows living by their own values, as well as its princess, Faputa. The village collapses after being freed by Faputa’s wish, and Riko and her companions invite Faputa to join them as they continue their journey toward the seventh layer.
