Anniversary Projects in the Kamen Rider Franchise
Throughout its history, Kamen Rider has produced major works to commemorate milestone anniversaries. For the 45th anniversary, Kamen Rider 1 was released in 2016, starring Hiroshi Fujioka as Takeshi Hongo and Kamen Rider No. 1, with Osamu Kaneda serving as director.
For the 50th anniversary, three major projects were unveiled: Shin Kamen Rider released in 2023, directed and written by Hideaki Anno; Kamen Rider BLACK SUN released in 2022 on Prime Video, starring Hidetoshi Nishijima and Tomoya Nakamura; and Fuuto PI, the animated sequel to Kamen Rider W, which premiered in 2022 on U NEXT and MX.
Kamen Rider Agito Chosen as the 55th Anniversary Film
In 2026, the official launch of the Kamen Rider Movie Project was announced as part of the 55th anniversary celebrations, followed by a countdown that began on the 7th. Ten days before the project reveal, on the 17th, eleven candidate titles were announced, sparking widespread speculation and excitement among fans on social media regarding which series would be selected as the commemorative work.
The title ultimately chosen was Kamen Rider Agito, the 2001 series that achieved the highest average television ratings in the Heisei era at 11.7 percent, a record that remains unbroken. Its popularity led to the first theatrical film in the Heisei Kamen Rider era and positioned the series as a major turning point for the franchise. The new film, Agito Psychic War, removes the words Kamen Rider from its title and is produced as a bold, unconventional project aimed at adult audiences, delivering a large scale psychic action spectacle.
Cast and Returning Original Members

Jun kaname as Makoto Hikawa
The film stars Jun Kaname, known for the Kingdom film series and his upcoming role as Akechi Mitsuhide in the 2026 NHK historical drama Brothers in Arms. Kamen Rider Agito marked Kaname’s acting debut, in which he portrayed police officer Makoto Hikawa, also known as Kamen Rider G3.

Toshiki Kashu as Shoichi Tsugami
Joining him is Toshiki Kashu, who reprises his role as Shoichi Tsugami, also known as Kamen Rider Agito. They are joined by a reunion of original cast members including Toko Fujita, Jun Yamazaki, Akiyoshi Shibata, Takeshi Masu, Rina Akiyama, Tokimasa Tanabe, and Takanori Higuchi, bringing together a cast lineup deeply connected to the original series.
Story and Visual Themes
The story is set in a world where people begin awakening to psychic powers one after another. As chaos spreads due to individuals abusing these abilities for criminal acts, a single police officer rises to confront the crisis. Makoto Hikawa possesses no special powers, yet he is an earnest and clumsy man who believes in justice more strongly than anyone else. Centered on Hikawa, the film weaves together human drama and psychic action.
The teaser visual features the striking image of a damaged Kamen Rider Gills helmet alongside the tagline Humanity Awakens. In the television series, Kamen Rider Gills was portrayed by Yusuke Tomoi as Ryo Ashihara. What the broken helmet signifies in a world where humanity is evolving remains a key mystery, hinting at an epic narrative befitting the franchise’s 55th anniversary.
Teaser Trailer
In the announcement trailer, powerful text appears reading Humanity Awakens and The moment humans gain power, they become monsters. The footage depicts people believed to have awakened psychic abilities using their powers recklessly, plunging the world into turmoil. Amid the chaos, the stern expressions of Makoto Hikawa and Shoichi Tsugami leave a strong impression.
The trailer concludes with the words Kamen Rider 55th Anniversary Kamen Rider Chronicle Begins, suggesting the birth of a new label within the franchise and heightening anticipation for what lies ahead.
Comments from the Cast and Producer
■Jun Kaname
In this milestone year marking both the 55th anniversary of Kamen Rider and the 25th anniversary of Agito, I am truly happy and honored to return to this world as the lead after 25 years. Agito is the origin of my acting career, where my challenges and growth began. With the emotions I can express now and the passion I carried back then, I faced this project sincerely. I want to deliver this film with heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has supported us over the years and to all who made this miraculous opportunity possible.
■Toshiki Kashu
It is deeply moving to me as a performer that Agito has been chosen to carry the important banner of the Kamen Rider 55th anniversary. I am sincerely honored to return once again as Agito. I was surprised when I first heard about the new project, but after reading the script by Mr. Inoue and reuniting with my former colleagues on set, Shoichi Tsugami instantly awakened within me. On April 29, let us meet again in theaters for Agito Psychic War.
■Producer Shinichiro Shirakura
What does transformation mean in Kamen Rider? Does the body change, or does one simply don a mask and suit? Even after 55 years, there is no single answer. Yet it is precisely because it is ambiguous that it defines Kamen Rider. A Kamen Rider is someone who crosses the wavering boundary between human and monster. Makoto Hikawa, portrayed by Kaname Jun, does not transform. He has no special abilities and only wears reinforced armor on his human body. Even so, through sheer will, he crosses that boundary. For the 55th anniversary, we want to present a story of transformation that only Kamen Rider can tell.
