The film is directed by Masaki Watanabe, who has been involved with the Crayon Shin chan television series as an episode director since 2022 and has worked on storyboards and partial direction for the movie series since 2024. This marks Watanabe’s first time serving as chief director for a Crayon Shin chan theatrical film.
Watanabe commented that he feels both honored and deeply moved to take on the role, while also sensing the pressure that comes with it. He teased that the story is set in a Land of Yokai that preserves elements of Japan’s original landscapes, where Shin chan transforms into a tengu and plays an active role. According to him, the Nohara family will meet many different yokai, leading to the usual chaotic and exciting developments fans expect.
The screenplay is written by Yoshiko Nakamura, who previously worked on scripts for the Crayon Shin chan television series. Reflecting on her first participation in the movie series, Nakamura shared that she feels the world today changes much faster than when she was a child. She expressed her desire to convey the idea that while some things from the past were wonderful, the present and future also hold value, and wrote the script with those feelings in mind, despite feeling nervous about the challenge.

Yumiko Kobayashi, the voice of Shin chan, also shared her enthusiasm. She noted that the story is set in Akita, Hiroshi’s hometown, and features many familiar yokai causing chaos together with Shin chan. She expressed excitement about the strange and lively story that unfolds between Shin chan and the yokai, and said she is already looking forward to sharing this mysterious and fun filled summer with audiences.
Alongside the announcement, a super teaser video and visual were revealed. The teaser visual depicts Shin chan gazing up at a sky filled with fireworks, letting out an awed exclamation as the colorful display spreads across the night. Hidden among the fireworks are silhouettes of yokai, sparking curiosity about how these charming and intriguing creatures will meet Shin chan and join him in a once in a lifetime summer adventure. The tagline A fun and mysterious encounter hints at the story awaiting Shin chan and the Nohara family.
Another newly revealed visual features Tengu Shin chan, dressed in a green and red tengu outfit. He wears the traditional single tooth geta sandals, with a hat and wings that resemble the style of Kantam Robo. Holding a fox patterned feather fan, Shin chan strikes a dignified pose as colorful will o wisp like flames surround him. With much of the film still shrouded in mystery, anticipation continues to build for future updates on Crayon Shin chan the Movie Kiki Kaikai Ora no Yokai Vacation.
