Cygames announced on November 7 that it has reached a settlement with Konami Digital Entertainment regarding the lawsuit filed over Uma Musume Pretty Derby and the related invalidation trial for the patents in question. The announcement was made through Cygames’ official website.

The statement, titled “Regarding the Settlement of the Lawsuit Filed Against Our Company,” explains the background of the case:
“Since being sued on March 31, 2023, we have filed invalidation trials for all 18 patents involved in the case.”

Cygames further stated, “Although we remain confident that no patent infringement occurred, we have decided to settle the matter in order to achieve an early resolution of the dispute and to ensure that users can continue to enjoy Uma Musume Pretty Derby in a safe and secure environment. Details of the settlement remain confidential under a nondisclosure agreement.”

The company also expressed respect toward Konami and others in the gaming industry:
“We have great respect for the creativity and effort of game creators at Konami Digital Entertainment and other companies. Through this settlement, we aim to contribute to the further development of the gaming industry as a whole. Cygames will continue striving to deliver content that can be enjoyed by people all over the world.”

The lawsuit was originally filed by Konami in 2023, alleging that Uma Musume Pretty Derby infringed on its patent rights. At that time, Cygames had issued a statement titled “Regarding the Lawsuit Filed Against Our Company,” in which it explained that the company had engaged in sincere discussions with Konami concerning certain elements of the game’s system and programming but that these discussions did not result in mutual agreement, leading to the lawsuit.

Cygames maintained its stance: “We believe Uma Musume Pretty Derby does not infringe on Konami’s patent rights, and we will demonstrate the legitimacy of our position through the legal process.” The company also reassured fans and stakeholders, saying, “We apologize for any concern this may cause, but the Uma Musume Pretty Derby service will continue without interruption.”
