Umamusume is a cross-media franchise that anthropomorphises real Japanese racehorses such as Special Week, Silence Suzuka, and Tokai Teio into characters, spanning games, manga, and anime. The first anime season aired from April to June 2018, the second from January to March 2021, and the third from October to December 2023. A mobile game launched in February 2021, followed by the first feature-length film in May 2024. The first cour of Cinderella Gray aired from April to June 2025.
The anime adapts the ongoing manga Umamusume Cinderella Gray, published in Weekly Young Jump, which has surpassed 8 million copies in circulation. It follows Oguri Cap, the strongest Umamusume, from her local beginnings to legendary status at the national stage. It tells the story of a gray-haired girl, once called a “monster,” chasing her dream in a youth Cinderella tale.
The anime adaptation was timed with the 40th anniversary of racehorse Oguri Cap’s birth. Yuki Ito directs, with Aki Kindaichi handling series composition, character designs by Takuya Miyahara and Keigo Sasaki, and animation by CygamesPictures.
