Girl Meets Rock! Unveils Promo Visuals Inspired by Kenshi Yonezu’s “Umi to Sanshouo”

To commemorate the September 4 release of Volume 8 of Girl Meets Rock!, promotional visuals inspired by Kenshi Yonezu’s song Umi to Sanshouo were unveiled on September 1 at Tokyo Station and Umeda Station in Osaka. These visuals, combining lyrics from the song with manga panels, reflect a pivotal scene from the series’ popular Episode 69. The campaign coincides with a special feature published in Weekly Shonen Jump Issue 40.

Starting September 1, special visuals inspired by Kenshi Yonezu’s Umi to Sanshouo were posted at two major transportation hubs: the North Gate Concourse of Osaka Metro Midosuji Line’s Umeda Station and near the Marunouchi Underground Central Exit of Tokyo Station. The campaign runs through September 7.

The visuals were created to celebrate the release of Volume 8 of Girl Meets Rock!, a high school band manga serialized on Shonen Jump+ since January 2024. They feature a combination of Yonezu’s lyrics and manga panels from the series.


Episode 69’s Impact: A Scene That Resonated with Fans

The idea for the promotional visuals came from a widely praised scene in Episode 69 of the series. In this episode, Kouki Takami, the vocalist of the rival band protocol., performs Umi to Sanshouo while reflecting on his older brother Tatsuki.

The episode drew significant attention after its release, surpassing 900,000 views in a week. This marked the series’ highest weekly view count to date and generated strong fan response on social media.

Volume 8 and a Special Appearance in Weekly Shonen Jump

In Volume 8, the long-awaited live showdown between protagonist Chihiro Hatono’s band Heartbreak and protocol. reaches its conclusion.

To further celebrate the release, a special side story appears in Weekly Shonen Jump Issue 40, also released on September 1. The special chapter depicts Heartbreak members introducing their club during a school orientation session for middle school students.
