What Is Gachiakuta?

Set in the slums where the descendants of criminals struggle to survive, Gachiakuta follows Rudo, an orphan with a rare gift—he can see value in things the rest of the world has thrown away. His life changes forever when a sudden incident sends him plunging into the Pit, the grim final stop for society’s outcasts. Down there, he meets the Cleaners and comes face-to-face with terrifying Trash Beasts born from garbage.

The manga has been running in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine since February 2022, brought to life by manga artist Kei Urana and graffiti designer Hideyoshi Andou.

Riyo is voiced by Yumiri Hanamori (花守ゆみり). She was born on September 29 in Kanagawa Prefecture, and she also runs her own agency, tomorrow jam. She's got a lower-pitched voice, but she's a versatile actress. She can play all kinds of characters, from cool and composed to bright and soothing. Some of her notable works include Sango Suzumura / Cure Coral in Tropical-Rouge! Pretty Cure, Sagiri in Hell's Paradise: Jigokuraku and Nadeshiko Kagamihara in Laid-Back Camp.

Riyo’s Personality

Riyo is a bright and positive person who tends to see things in an encouraging light. Among the Cleaners, she was the first to show real concern for Rudo when he had just joined. She's got that caring, big-sister vibe, always looking out for others and showing her compassionate side.

But in battle, she's a whole different ball game. Riyo keeps her cool when she's up against some huge Trash Beasts and doesn't hesitate to charge ahead on her own. Actually, the stronger the opponent, the more it seems to fire up her fighting spirit. She's been with the Cleaners longer than Zanka, and like Enjin, she's a reliable senior.

Riyo's got a great smile and a way of making people feel better, but she's also had a tough life. She's never told her teammates about this part of her life. The only one who knows the truth is Enjin, the leader of Team Akuta.

Riyo’s Abilities and Fighting Style

Riyo's got a pair of scissor like weapons known as The Ripper. It looks like your everyday scissors, but when you need it, it'll transform into a huge sword.

Her fighting style is very distinctive. Riyo controls the enlarged Ripper with her feet, turning it into an extension of her movements. She usually hooks the weapon onto her foot and swings it in wide arcs. This is just the start. She can also hook her foot through the handle rings to slice with precision, or kick the weapon forward to stab her target.

This technique, which relies a lot on footwork, lets her deliver sharp sweeping attacks that cover a wide area while still being flexible enough to strike at close range. It's a pretty versatile style that goes well with Riyo and shows off her love of efficiency and practicality in combat.

■Rudo

For Rudo, who'd just joined the Cleaners, Riyo quickly became like a big sister to her. She was the one who playfully touched his hair, suggested a welcome party, and guided him around headquarters.
