What Is Gachiakuta?

Set in the slums where the descendants of criminals struggle to survive, Gachiakuta follows Rudo, an orphan with a rare gift. He can see the value in things that everyone else has already thrown away. His life changes forever when a sudden incident sends him plunging into the Pit, the grim final stop for society's outcasts. There, he meets the Cleaners and comes face to face with terrifying Trash Beasts born from garbage.

The manga has been running in Kodansha's Weekly Shonen Magazine since February 2022, created by manga artist Kei Urana together with graffiti designer Hideyoshi Andou.

Enjin is voiced by Katsuyuki Konishi, a veteran voice actor who's been in loads of big games that have been really well received. His most notable works include Tengen Uzui in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, where he played both Kyoshiro Mibu and Kyo the True Muramasa in Samurai Deeper Kyo, and Ashikaga Takauji in The Elusive Samurai (2024). His steady career and varied performances show the experience he brings to the role of Enjin.

Enjin’s Personality

Enjin is the first person Rudo meets after falling into the Pit. He's part of the Cleaners, who go up against the Trash Beasts, and he's a key player on Team Akuta.

He seems like a bit of a dependable older brother figure. Enjin sees that Rudo has what it takes to be a Giver, so they bring him into the Cleaners. He explains how to use Vital Instruments, helps out in dangerous battles, and supports Rudo's growth.

At the same time, he really values his comrades. When they're attacked by enemies, he's quick to get angry. He's also great at encouraging people, like by making Zanka Rudo's mentor and praising him to motivate him.

On the other hand, he can be a bit bold or rough. To put Rudo through his paces, Enjin once handed him over to bandits for a bit. He also sold Rudo's clothes to get money. These actions show a more daring side, not only the reliable one.

Origin of the name "Enjin"

Enjin’s real name has not been revealed. The name “Enjin” was given to him by a benefactor. According to Enjin, it comes from an old language and means “a person of connection” or “someone tied by bonds.” Written in kanji, it may be expressed as 縁人, which carries the nuance of people linked by relationships or shared ties. This suggests that the “old language” he mentions could in fact be Japanese.

There also seems to be a link between his name and his signature Vital Instrument, the umbrella. At one point he says, “I’ll be the marker. An umbrella always stands out.” This may hint at a deeper connection between his name and the symbolic role of the umbrella.

Enjin’s Abilities and Fighting Style

Enjin is considered to be among the stronger characters in the story. His fighting style is centered on his Vital Instrument, an umbrella called Umbreaker.

When opened, the umbrella’s edges turn into blades, cutting down Trash Beasts. Its tip and rib lines can also change into sharp edges. Even when closed, it can be spun like a drill and thrust at enemies.

So far, however, he has not been shown fighting at full strength. The full extent of his ability remains unknown.

Enjin’s Relationships

■Rudo

Enjin is the first person Rudo meets in the Pit. He identifies Rudo’s ability as a Giver and recruits him into the Cleaners. For Rudo, he is both a mentor and a reliable figure, teaching him about Vital Instruments and how to fight.

■Zanka

Enjin seems to view Zanka as a capable young man. Their connection began when Enjin helped Zanka during a time when he struggled with differences in ability compared to his classmates and sister. Enjin acknowledges Zanka’s skills and assigns him as Rudo’s mentor. Zanka respects Enjin, and Enjin encourages him further by praising his guidance of Rudo.

■Riyo

Enjin is the only one who knows about Riyo’s previous occupation. The manga has offered a small glimpse of how they first met, but since the anime has not yet revealed this part, we will refrain from going into detail here out of consideration for anime viewers.

Enjin is a bit of an enigma in Gachiakuta, as we don't really know much about his past. Even so, he's already had a big impact on Team Akuta. He's thoughtful towards his comrades, he's fiercely loyal and he often acts as a guide for those around him.
