Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle Arc the Movie: Akaza Returns has surpassed ¥17.639 billion ($119.98 million) in box office revenue in Japan just 17 days after its July 18 release. The film also exceeded 12.55 million total admissions, ranking 10th in Japan’s all-time box office history and surpassing the 2003 film Bayside Shakedown 2.

Akaza Returns Breaks into Japan’s All-Time Top 10

The latest installment in the Demon Slayer franchise, Akaza Returns, has earned ¥17,639,557,600 ($119.98 million) and recorded 12,558,582 admissions in just 17 days. According to data published on August 4, the film has now entered the top 10 of Japan’s all-time highest-grossing films, overtaking Bayside Shakedown 2, which grossed ¥17.35 billion.

This places Akaza Returns ahead of its predecessor Mugen Train in terms of box office pace. Mugen Train, released in October 2020, had reached ¥15.799 billion ($107.4 million) with 11.89 million admissions in the same 17-day timeframe.

Record-Breaking Opening and Admissions

The film debuted with a record-setting performance. On its opening day, it earned ¥1.646 billion ($11.2 million) with over 1.15 million admissions—marking the highest opening day revenue ever recorded in Japan. Over the first three days, it grossed ¥5.524 billion ($37.6 million) with 3.84 million admissions.

By day 10, it had brought in ¥12.872 billion ($87.6 million) with 9.1 million viewers. The 8-day total exceeded ¥10.5 billion, setting a new record for the fastest Japanese film to cross the ¥10 billion milestone.

The film is currently being shown in 452 theaters nationwide, including 59 IMAX screens.

Franchise Performance and Global Impact

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is based on the manga by Koyoharu Gotouge, serialized from February 2016 to May 2020 in Weekly Shonen Jump. The manga has surpassed 220 million copies in global circulation.

The anime began airing in 2019 with the Unwavering Resolve Arc. Mugen Train, released in 2020, became a cultural phenomenon with a global gross of approximately ¥51.7 billion ($351.7 million).

Since then, the franchise has expanded to include the Entertainment District Arc (2021), Swordsmith Village Arc (2023), and Hashira Training Arc (2024). The ongoing Infinity Castle Arc is being adapted as a trilogy, with Akaza Returns as the first installment. The film depicts the beginning of the final battle against Muzan Kibutsuji and the Upper Rank Demons inside the Infinity Castle.
