Japanese F1 driver Yuki Tsunoda walked the red carpet at the world premiere of the upcoming Hollywood movie F1, held in Times Square, New York, on June 16 (local time). The film, starring Brad Pitt as a legendary Formula 1 racer, is set to hit theaters on June 27, 2025.
Tsunoda, currently the only active Japanese F1 driver, praised the movie for its balance of spectacle and authenticity. “It felt relatable in some parts, and very Hollywood in others—but I think that boldness helps communicate the thrill of F1 to new fans,” he said.
He also commended Brad Pitt’s driving, saying, “From a driver’s perspective, he really pulled it off. The movie delivers his aggressiveness and the intensity of real F1 racing.” Pitt underwent intense training and drove an actual F1 machine during filming.
The film was shot on real circuits during Grand Prix weekends, allowing Pitt and Tsunoda to cross paths. “Brad came to the circuits often during race weeks. He was filming just beside me while I was racing. He’s a really easygoing, nice guy,” Tsunoda recalled with a smile.
Asked what to look forward to in the film, Tsunoda added humorously, “There are quite a few scenes where Brad overtakes me—so enjoy those! Even if you’re not familiar with F1, you’ll get that Top Gun: Maverick-like speed and excitement.”
The premiere drew major attention with appearances from Brad Pitt, Damson Idris, Kerry Condon, Javier Bardem, Lewis Hamilton (who also co-produced the film), director Joseph Kosinski, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer. About 500 fans and 70 media outlets attended the star-studded event, where an actual F1 car was also on display.
