[Interview] A “Gundam” That Doesn't Fight: The Vision Behind Osaka Expo’s Sole IP Pavilion Promoting Peace Through Mobile Suits

Inspiring the Next Generation Through Wonde

――There are elements for everyone, young and old.

Momoi
What children think of the pavilion really interests me. I heard stories of kids who visited the 1970 Expo and were so inspired they pursued careers in science and medicine. If even one child decides to become an astronaut because of this experience, it would be incredibly rewarding.

――Expo 2025 runs for about six months. Any tips for enjoying it?

Momoi
The full-scale Gundam statue is placed in a location with stunning sunsets. It looks different in the morning, afternoon, evening, and at night—so we encourage visitors to return multiple times.

“Connecting with Fans”: Building Bonds Through Gundam

――How do you keep fans engaged in the age of “oshi-katsu” (fandom devotion)?

Momoi: Fandom has become a way for people to express themselves emotionally. We’ve always wanted our products to be cherished. It’s touching to see fans treat Gundam with such affection.

Our company builds mid-term strategies every three years. Until now, our theme has been “Connect with Fans,” and we’ve decided to carry that forward for the next cycle. It truly reflects our mission.

Looking Back at the Road to Expo 2025

――Any reflections looking back on the journey?

Momoi
Initially, there were voices of opposition. Some questioned whether Gundam, with its war-centered narratives, was appropriate for the Expo. But we spent time refining every detail—crafting experiences and visuals that spark future-focused thinking through Gundam. We believe the result is a pavilion that aligns with the Expo’s message while still delivering the excitement fans expect—and the positive feedback we’ve received so far confirms that.
