The 28th theatrical installment in the Detective Conan anime franchise, Detective Conan: One-eyed Flashback, which premiered on April 18, has made a remarkable debut at the Japanese box office. Surpassing the Opening of the Series’ Highest-Grossing Film
The previous film, Detective Conan: The Million-dollar Pentagram (released in 2024), currently holds the franchise’s record with 15.8 billion yen ($111 million) in total revenue. It had earned 3.3 billion yen ($23 million) in its first three days. One-eyed Flashback has already outpaced that record, indicating the potential for a new all-time high.
Distributor Toho commented, “This is a historic start. We expect it to exceed the previous film’s earnings.”
On its opening day alone, One-eyed Flashback drew 690,000 moviegoers and earned 1.05 billion yen ($7.4 million). Compared to The Million-dollar Pentagram, which had 630,000 attendees and 960 million yen ($6.8 million) on day one, the new film is performing at 109% of its predecessor’s pace.
The Franchise Continues Its Box Office Momentum
Detective Conan has seen consecutive record-breaking performances in recent years. In 2023, Black Iron Submarine grossed 13.88 billion yen ($98 million), followed by The Million-dollar Pentagram in 2024 with 15.8 billion yen ($111 million). Now, One-eyed Flashback is on track to raise the bar even higher.
Memories Awakened in the Snowy Mountains of Nagano
Set in the snow-covered mountains of Nagano Prefecture, the story follows Kansuke Yamato of the Nagano Prefectural Police, who is injured during a mission while pursuing a suspect. A bullet grazes his left eye, and he’s caught in an avalanche. Miraculously, he survives and returns to duty 10 months later.
Soon after, a report comes in about a mysterious attack on a researcher at the Nobeyama Radio Observatory. Yamato rushes to the scene, but as the parabolic antenna begins to move, pain surges through his now-blinded left eye.
Meanwhile, Kogoro Mouri and Conan Edogawa are en route to meet a former colleague from Kogoro’s days in the Tokyo Metropolitan Police. Suddenly, a gunshot rings out—triggering the unraveling of a long-buried memory that connects Kogoro and Yamato in an unexpected way.
