In May last year, Furuya admitted to having an extramarital affair. On May 22, Bunshun Online reported on the scandal with the headline:

Following the report, Furuya addressed the situation on X (formerly Twitter) on the same day, stating:

"I, Toru Furuya, was interviewed by Shukan Bunshun. I would like to apologize and report on the serious wrongdoing I have committed. I was in an extramarital relationship with a female fan for four and a half years until September last year."

He continued:
