Trust Issues Between Manga Creators and Publishers Continue: Yang Can't Live Alone Creator Ends Serialization and Seeks Return of Rights, Citing “Breakdown of Trust”

Yang Can't Live Alone (JP: ヤン先輩はひとりで生きていけない) creator sooncha announced on Aug. 3 that the manga will end its serialization on SQUARE ENIX's Manga UP! app and that discussions are underway to reclaim the series' publishing rights.

Creator Cites a Breakdown of Trust With Manga UP!

In a post on X titled “Notice Regarding the End of Yang Can't Live Alone and the Planned Withdrawal of Its Publishing Rights,” sooncha explained:
“Due to a breakdown of trust with Manga UP!, the serialization of Yang Can't Live Alone will end with Chapter 15, Part 3, scheduled for release on Aug. 13. I sincerely apologize to all readers for making this announcement just before the release of Volume 3.”

The creator continued:
“Further details are expected to be announced by Manga UP! at a later date. I was informed that the release of Volume 3 on Aug. 6 could not be stopped in either print or digital format. If you have any concerns, I apologize for the inconvenience, but please consider canceling your order.”

Sooncha added that discussions are currently underway with the editorial department to reclaim the rights to the series, with the intention of ensuring that readers will eventually receive the continuation of Yang Can't Live Alone.

“I am currently discussing the withdrawal of the rights with the editorial department so that I can make sure the continuation of Yang Can't Live Alone reaches you. I would be grateful if you could wait until then. I am truly sorry.”

Similar Publisher Dispute Announced in July

The announcement follows another recent dispute involving a manga creator and publisher.

On July 23, Make Heroine wo Katasetai!! (JP: 負けヒロインを勝たせたい！！), which had been serialized on Champion Cross, announced that its serialization and publication through Akita Shoten would be discontinued.

Manga artist Tatsuwipe posted a joint statement on X with original creator Michiru Nakayama, explaining:
“To explain the circumstances, it became difficult to establish a relationship of trust with the publisher. The creators therefore decided to end the serialization and halt publication. We sincerely apologize to all the readers who have supported the series for having to make this announcement.”

The manga industry has consequently seen multiple recent cases in which serialization or publication has been halted because of deteriorating relationships between creators and publishers.
