Kyoto Animation President Hideaki Hatta Dies at 76: Led the Studio Under the Motto “Creating Together”

Kyoto Animation President Hideaki Hatta (JP: 八田英明) has passed away at the age of 76. The acclaimed studio announced that Hatta died on February 16, 2026.

According to the official statement released by the company on March 2, “Our Representative Director and President, Hideaki Hatta, passed away on February 16, 2026 at the age of 76. We would like to express our deepest gratitude for the kindness and support he received during his lifetime.”


Led Kyoto Animation Since Its Founding in 1985

The statement continued by reflecting on his long career, noting that since the company’s establishment in 1985, Hatta had led Kyoto Animation for more than four decades under the motto “Creating Together.” With a sincere commitment to animation production, he sought to build an entertainment company that valued people above all else.

Throughout his tenure as president, Hatta emphasized teamwork and collective creativity as the foundation of the studio’s work. His leadership philosophy shaped Kyoto Animation into a globally respected studio known for its dedication to quality storytelling and craftsmanship.

The company also announced that Shinichiro Hatta has succeeded him as president. Employees stated that they will carry on Hideaki Hatta’s vision and continue creating works that audiences around the world can enjoy, true to the spirit of “Creating Together.”

The wake and funeral were held privately with family members only. The company has respectfully declined flowers, condolence money, and visits.
