The anime is based on the light novel series written by Satsuki Nakamura and illustrated by Yuki Kana, published under Ichijinsha Novels. The manga adaptation by Ei Ohitsuji is serialized in Monthly Comic ZERO-SUM. The novel won the “Light Novel Award” in the Cmoa Minna ga Erabu Digital Comic Awards 2023 and ranked first in the BookLive! Annual Ranking 2023 for women’s light novels. The manga has also been recognized, with Zhu Getsuei nominated for the “Best Supporting Actress” category at the Magademy Awards 2023, and the work received the “Rakuten Kobo E-Book Award 2024” in the Must-Read Comic category.

The story follows two girls of opposite natures: Kou Reirin, known as the “Butterfly of His Highness,” who is admired for her wisdom and beauty, and Zhu Getsuei, who is scorned as a villainess due to her jealousy and cruel behavior. Their contrasting fates intertwine in a gripping palace drama of reversed roles and self-discovery.
