Joe Hisaishi’s First Hollywood Score
Renowned Japanese composer Joe Hisaishi has composed the music for his first-ever Hollywood film, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey. The movie will be released in Japan on December 19, distributed by Sony Pictures. Hisaishi, known globally for his work on Studio Ghibli films, was personally approached by director Kogonada to score the film. His soundtrack is expected to play a significant role in shaping the film’s emotional tone.
Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell Reunite On Screen
The film stars Margot Robbie, known for her roles in Suicide Squad, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Bombshell, which earned her an Academy Award nomination. This marks her first feature film since Barbie, released approximately two years ago. She shares the screen with Colin Farrell, who co-stars in the lead. Farrell previously received the Best Actor award at the Venice International Film Festival for The Banshees of Inisherin, and the Best Actor prize from the National Society of Film Critics for After Yang. He has also appeared in major titles such as Fantastic Beasts and The Batman.
Kogonada Draws Ghibli Inspiration
Kogonada, the Korean-American director behind the critically acclaimed After Yang, helms the project. A self-professed fan of Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli, Kogonada incorporates elements inspired by Miyazaki’s work into the film’s visual storytelling. His admiration for Ghibli led him to offer the music role directly to Hisaishi, making this a notable collaboration between two artists deeply rooted in cinematic emotion.
A Journey Through Time and Memory
In the newly released teaser, viewers are introduced to fantastical doors—such as a solitary red door standing in the middle of a grassland and a floating blue door in a greenhouse-like space. These doors serve as portals across time. David (played by Farrell) and Sarah (portrayed by Robbie) meet at a friend’s wedding and are guided by a car navigation system to one of these mysterious doors. What lies beyond are pivotal moments from their pasts, including David’s teenage memories of first love and Sarah’s final, missed chance to say goodbye to her mother. The characters revisit days they most wish they could change, prompting emotional confrontations with their own histories and loved ones.
