Gundam GQuuuuuuX: Backstories Behind Char's Custom Units—Including the Char-Exclusive Big-Zam and the Director’s Passionate Fixation on the Gelgoog
The latest installment of the Gundam series, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX, co-produced by Sunrise and Khara, held a special stage greeting event in Tokyo on the 28th to commemorate the re-release of the theatrical prequel Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning. The event featured voice actress Tomoyo Kurosawa, who plays Amate Yuzuriha (MACHU), scriptwriter Yoji Enokido, and director Kazuya Tsurumaki.

The final episode (Episode 12) of Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX aired late on the 24th, showcasing an epic battle between Char’s custom Gelgoog, the Elmeth, the Gundam, and the G-Fighter.
Director Kazuya Tsurumaki commented:
“In interviews during the film’s theatrical release, I mentioned that the Gelgoog is my favorite mobile suit.”
However, within the world of GQuuuuuuX, the Gelgoog is portrayed as a Zeon mobile suit developed using data from the Gundam.

Tsurumaki admitted with a laugh:
“I’m glad I got to feature my beloved Gelgoog as much as I wanted in the final episode. The beam naginata is officially yellow according to canon. Personally, I assumed it would naturally be blue-white, but because the official color setting is yellow, the color designer followed that and submitted it in yellow.
At the last minute, I had to say, ‘Sorry, this should be blue-white,’ and requested a retake. I feel bad, but I just couldn’t let it go.”
In addition, the final episode featured a variety of "Char-exclusive" mobile suits.

Tsurumaki revealed:
“There were some very short cuts where we had to convey really dense lore. I thought the best way to represent the many Gundam universes was through the mobile suits.
So I decided to include MS that hadn’t shown up in GQuuuuuuX before. Big-Zam had appeared, but I thought a Char-exclusive Big-Zam would be hilarious.
I even threw in the Zudah. Yeah… my inner otaku really came out,” he said with a bashful smile.
This series is a new Gundam installment created through a collaboration between Studio Khara—known for the Evangelion series—and Sunrise. It aired on the Nippon TV network. Tsurumaki, who directed Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time and other entries in the Rebuild of Evangelion film series, directed this work. The series composition was handled by Yoji Enokido, with mechanical design by Ikuto Yamashita, gathering a star-studded creative team.
