New Lupin the IIIrd Movie to Premiere Worldwide as Koike’s Anime Series Reaches Its Finale—Kurita Hopes for a Sequel
The new Lupin the IIIrd anime film, Fujimi no Ketsuzoku, will be released globally, marking the finale of the acclaimed series directed by Takeshi Koike. The story follows Lupin and his crew as they head toward the Bermuda Triangle. Just as they near the mysterious island, their plane is shot down, forcing them into an emergency landing on what is ominously called the “Island of Death.”

There, they encounter Muom, the island’s ruler, who claims immortality and seeks to dominate the world through selection and elimination. Guns and swords are useless against this “unkillable enemy,” pushing Lupin to risk his past, his pride, and his identity as a thief in a cunning battle of wits.

Koike’s LUPIN THE IIIRD anime series has spanned over a decade, beginning with Daisuke Jigen’s Gravestone (2013), followed by Goemon Ishikawa’s Spray of Blood (2015), Fujiko Mine’s Lie (2019), and Zenigata and the Two Lupins (2025). With the latest film, the series is now considered complete.

Reflecting on the series, voice actor Kanichi Kurita, who plays Lupin, praised his castmates: “I really felt that Daisuke [Namikawa] has truly become Goemon, and that Akio [Otsuka] has nailed Jigen to the point where you can’t tell him apart from the original.” Though the series is reportedly finished, Kurita added with a smile, “Is it really over with these five films? Among the staff, we’ve been saying we won’t let it end just yet.”
Koike, on the other hand, remarked, “This may be the end of my Lupin.” Still, Kurita responded wistfully, “It’s ending...? This world Koike created is so unique—it’s a project that taught us a lot in a different way. With a global release, I hope more people get to experience his vision,” leaving the door open for future possibilities.
