Episode 44 of The Apothecary Diaries, titled “Fortress,” will air on May 30, 2025, marking a pivotal turn in the story as Maomao is captured and drawn into a national-level conspiracy. Ahead of its broadcast, the official synopsis and scene stills have been released. Note that the series will take a scheduled break on June 20.

About The Apothecary Diaries

This captivating mystery-drama follows Maomao, the eccentric apothecary’s daughter obsessed with poisons and medicines, and Jinshi, a beautiful yet enigmatic eunuch. Together, they solve a series of perplexing cases within the imperial court. The series is based on the original novels by Natsu Hyūga, with illustrations by Touko Shino.

The anime's first season, which aired in October 2023, captivated audiences with Maomao’s spirited heroine, engaging mysteries, and intricate human drama within the rear palace. The series consistently ranked high across streaming platforms.

In Season 2, tensions escalate in the imperial palace with the announcement of Empress Gyokuyou’s pregnancy. Adding to the intrigue are the arrival of Consort Rouran, daughter of a key minister from the previous emperor’s era, an unprecedented unresolved attempt on Jinshi’s life, and the disappearance of suspect Sui Reiyuu. Foreign delegations and special envoys with unreasonable demands further complicate matters, leading to a crisis that threatens the entire nation.

Episode 44 "Fortress" – Story Summary

Maomao and General Hyōbu infiltrate a warehouse that turns out to be the workshop of Fei Fa, the same place where Jinshi was previously attacked. There, they are discovered by a cold-hearted woman named Shinbi, accompanied by one of the imperial envoys, Aira. Though they narrowly escape punishment, Maomao is soon imprisoned in a snowbound fortress surrounded by high stone walls and filled with massive amounts of Fei Fa’s explosive weaponry.

As Maomao surveys her prison, she realizes she is at the center of a looming national crisis—one that could shake the very foundation of the empire.
