Ranma ½’s Legacy and the New Anime Era

Originally serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday from 1987 to 1996 and adapted into a TV anime (1989–1992), Ranma ½ tells the story of Ranma Saotome, a teenage martial artist who turns into a girl when splashed with cold water, and his fiancée Akane Tendo. The series is a beloved martial arts romantic comedy that has continued to capture hearts across generations through movies, OVAs, and even a 2011 live-action adaptation starring Yui Aragaki.

The newly produced anime, which aired from October to December 2024, marked the first full-length anime project for the series in 14 years since the 2010 OVA It’s a Rumic World: Ranma ½ – Nightmare! Incense of Spring Sleep. With the original cast reprising their roles, the new adaptation was a major success, and a second season is already in production.
