Kazunari Ninomiya and Nana Komatsu, stars of the upcoming suspense thriller Exit 8, have officially arrived in Cannes for the film’s world premiere in the Midnight Screening section of the 78th Cannes Film Festival, running from May 13 to 24. This marks the first Cannes appearance for both actors. Ninomiya shared, “Cannes is not a place I would normally visit without an opportunity like this. Watching the completed film alongside an audience is a true joy for a creator.” Komatsu added, “You can feel the excitement—there are festival posters all over town. I even visited the venue with the red carpet, but it still doesn't feel real… I could hardly sleep last night.”

The two began their visit by touring the historic Le Suquet old town, where they climbed cobblestone hills to take in panoramic views of Cannes from a medieval church and castle. Gazing over the city, they pointed toward the festival’s main theater and remarked, “That’s where we’ll be tonight.” Ninomiya noted, “So many charming buildings—this really feels like Cannes,” while Komatsu added, “The soft color palette of the town is beautiful.” They also took commemorative photos with a mini acrylic stand of “The Walking Man,” a character portrayed by Yamato Kawachi in the film.

Later, they visited the famous Croisette promenade by the sea. Exit 8 has already been confirmed for release in over 20 countries and regions, including France. Reflecting on the international attention, Ninomiya said, “Honestly, I’m more surprised than anything. The film hasn’t even been released yet, and it’s already drawing interest.” Komatsu commented, “It’s a fascinating story—only five characters, no character names, and an unpredictable plot.”

When asked about their expectations for the official screening, Ninomiya explained, “The Midnight Screening section has a festive vibe compared to other categories, so I hope to enjoy it with the audience in a relaxed atmosphere. I believe the film has the potential to do just that.” Komatsu added, “It’s my first time at Cannes, so I’m looking forward to the red carpet and the audience’s reactions. Most of all, I’m happy to be here with the director and staff—I want to enjoy the festival with everyone.”

Exit 8 is based on the viral indie game created solely by KOTAKE CREATE in 2023, which has surpassed 1.7 million downloads. The suspense-thriller depicts a surreal loop in an underground passage where the protagonist must detect “abnormalities” and escape the endless cycle.

The Midnight Screening section at Cannes is known for showcasing bold, genre-defying films during late-night slots. Past selections include Train to Busan (2017) and Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In (2024), both of which became international hits.

Exit 8 will have its official world premiere at 12:30 AM local time on May 19, with Ninomiya and Komatsu walking the red carpet for the first time at Cannes. The film is scheduled for theatrical release in Japan on August 29, 2025.
