On April 17, the Fisheries Agency of Japan unveiled a collaborative clear file and poster created in partnership with the TV anime Negative Positive Angler. This initiative aims to promote awareness and proper etiquette regarding fishing practices.

Original Visuals by NUT, the Studio Behind BLUE GIANT

This original anime series aired from October to December 2024 and was produced by NUT, the animation studio known for the critically acclaimed film BLUE GIANT, which received the Excellence Award for Animation at the 47th Japan Academy Film Prize. The anime highlights “fishing” as one of its central themes.

The front side of the clear file and the poster feature exclusive illustrations drawn for this collaboration, showing the characters Tsunehiro and Hana wearing life jackets as they head out to sea on a fishing boat. The reverse side uses a single frame from the anime’s opening sequence, depicting a fish illustration by artist Yusei Nagashima.

Story of Negative Positive Angler

Tsunehiro Sasaki is a university student burdened with massive debt and given only two years to live by his doctor. Living each day in despair, his life takes a turn when he accidentally falls into the sea while fleeing debt collectors and is rescued by Hana, a girl who loves fishing, and her fishing companion Takaaki.

At Hana’s urging, Tsunehiro experiences fishing for the first time and begins to connect with her and her friends. He takes up a part-time job at the convenience store where Hana and Takaaki work. Despite struggling with complex fishing terminology and the smell of raw bait, he gradually falls in love with the sport.

The feeling of a fish biting on the line gives him a sense of being alive—something he had lost. While his life doesn’t change overnight, fishing becomes a way for him to rediscover purpose. What will Tsunehiro ultimately find through this new journey?
