[INTERVIEW] Wonderful Precure! Episode on Pet Loss Moves Voice Actors to Tears: “The Animators Who Brought This to Life Are Truly Amazing!”

To celebrate the release of the Wonderful Precure! Blu-ray Vol. 1, a special event exclusively for purchasers was held on January 18, 2025, at High Life Plaza Itabashi in Tokyo. The event featured voice cast members Maria Naganawa (Cure Wonderful / Komugi Inukai), Atsumi Tanezaki (Cure Friendly / Iroha Inukai), Satsumi Matsuda (Cure Nyamie / Yuki Nekoyashiki), and Reina Ueda (Cure Lilian / Mayu Nekoyashiki). An official event report has now been released.

The event kicked off with an exciting entrance as the cast walked through the audience to the stage. When MC Maro Terasako asked the crowd, “You all want to hear that line, right?”, the venue erupted in cheers and applause. The cast responded by performing their transformation catchphrases live on stage. A touching moment occurred when Tanezaki, with her hand over her heart, watched Naganawa deliver her line.

Reflections with Two Episodes Left

The cast then shared their feelings as the show neared its final two episodes. Matsuda confessed, “It doesn’t feel real yet. I keep thinking, is it really ending?” Naganawa echoed that sentiment, saying, “I might be feeling the same as our viewers.” Tanezaki added, “I’m not sure how to put it, but I’ve been emotionally overwhelmed... maybe it won’t hit me until after the final episode airs.”

In contrast, Ueda noted, “I think I’m more aware that the end is near. We finished recording a while ago, and with the next Precure series (Kimi to Idol Precure♪) being announced, I can feel the baton being passed. I received a letter from the staff after our final recording. I thought I’d read it right away, but I decided to wait until the final episode airs. Every time I thought about reading it, I became more aware of the show ending. I just know I’ll cry when I finally do.”

Memorable Moments Over the Year

Looking back on the year, the cast shared their most memorable personal episodes.
Naganawa fondly remembered how children danced and cheered during events: “It was heartwarming to see families watching over them. I felt so much love—it truly made me happy.”

Tanezaki, after apologizing for any inconvenience caused, spoke about a time when she couldn’t attend recordings due to illness: “Even when I couldn’t be there, I constantly thought about everyone. I could almost hear Komugi’s voice shouting, ‘Iroha! Iroha!’ every day.”

She described how emotional it was returning to the studio: “I was so nervous, but when I finally met everyone, they welcomed me warmly. When I saw Komugi (Naganawa) and our eyes met, I couldn’t hold back my tears. We hugged immediately, and I kept apologizing for the wait.”

Ueda, who witnessed that moment, said with a smile, “I saw it! It was exactly as she described—so full of emotion, I felt like I should let them have that moment to themselves.” Matsuda added, “During Tanezaki’s break, she wrote us letters and sent messages. I cried so much I couldn’t believe it.” The cast replied to her letters with a video message, and Matsuda recalled, “Back then, I was the only one calling her ‘Tanezaki’ while the others called her ‘Acchan.’ I realized how distant that sounded, so I started calling her Acchan too.”

Matsuda’s memorable episode was when her twin sister, voice actress Risae Matsuda, gave her Nyamie-colored earrings to celebrate her casting: “I failed the Precure audition every year. My sister saw it all and cried with joy. She even prepared a gift—it finally felt real.” She wore those earrings at the event and showed them to the audience. She keeps them in a 20th anniversary Precure accessory pouch, along with matching accessories bought with Ueda and a gift from Naganawa.

Ueda, slightly nervous, said, “So many great stories... ‘It’s not scary, it’s not scary,’” and recounted her audition. She saw it as her last chance, and for the first time, her manager let her choose which role to audition for. “I recorded lines for all the characters, but I submitted Mayu’s because I felt a strong connection. Strangely, I wasn’t nervous at all at the studio audition—it felt natural, like fate.”

Her audition line was “Yuki’s so cute!”—a line that mirrored her real-life affection for cats. “Mayu was supported by Yuki in the story, and I was supported by Yuki too.” Though the audition went smoothly, she was so nervous during the first episode’s recording that she asked Matsuda to hold her hand.

Tanezaki laughed, “The dog team’s audition was the complete opposite—we were so nervous our voices cracked the whole time. We both thought, ‘Thank goodness we got in.’”
