Hunter x Hunter Creator Yoshihiro Togashi Reveals Brief Bedridden Period Due to Severe Back Pain

Yoshihiro Togashi, the creator of the manga Hunter x Hunter, updated his X (formerly Twitter) account on December 11, sharing that he had recently experienced a period of being bedridden due to health issues.

In his post, Togashi shared a photo of his completed manuscript for one chapter and revealed, “I was bedridden for a few days for various reasons.”

He added, “I’m now wobbling around but can walk inside the house and managed to retrieve my work smartphone on my own. I’m not good at asking for help.”

Health Struggles and a Recent Surgery

Last month, Togashi disclosed that he had undergone surgery under local anesthesia. Although he did not specify the procedure, he has been open about his ongoing struggles with severe back pain on social media.

In a previous handwritten message, Togashi revealed the severity of his condition, stating:

"For about two years, I couldn’t sit in a chair to draw. By giving up on my usual methods, I’ve managed to resume work for now."

He also urged fans to take care of their health, saying:

"Two weeks ago, I couldn’t even assume the posture needed to wipe myself. Every action takes me three to five times longer than normal. Please take care of your backs."

Impact on Hunter x Hunter’s Publication

Togashi’s health issues have significantly affected Hunter x Hunter’s release schedule. After Chapter 400 was published in Weekly Shonen Jump on December 26, 2022, it marked the end of its weekly serialization. At the time, the editorial team announced:

“After consulting with Togashi-sensei about his health, future chapters of Hunter x Hunter will be published in a format other than weekly serialization.”

They also reassured fans, saying Togashi was continuing to work on the story and that the editorial team remained committed to supporting him until its completion.

Recent Developments

Hunter x Hunter returned briefly in October 2024 with new chapters (starting from Chapter 401), but it was announced on December 9 that it would once again go on hiatus, with no new chapters published in the January 16 issue of Weekly Shonen Jump.

Fans await further updates on the series’ future publication schedule and wish for Togashi’s recovery.
