The Great Capcom Exhibition Unveils Chun-Li’s Stunning Sculpture and Rare “Game Design Manuscripts”
The Osaka Nakanoshima Museum of Art (Osaka City, Kita Ward) will host “The Great Capcom Exhibition: Game Creations That Captivate the World” from March 2024. During a press conference on November 20, organizers revealed details about this highly anticipated event. The exhibition is hosted by the Osaka Nakanoshima Museum of Art and The Yomiuri Shimbun, with special support from Capcom.
Behind the Theme: "Game Creations That Captivate the World"
Capcom producer Yasuyuki Makino explained the exhibition's subtitle as a window into the passion and behind-the-scenes ingenuity of game development. The key visuals incorporate pixel art and CG elements, departing from the usual hand-drawn artwork focus of traditional exhibitions. "This isn’t just a subtle shift; it’s a bold departure," Makino emphasized.
What to Expect: A Four-Stage Exhibition Journey
The exhibition is divided into four unique areas, each showcasing Capcom’s innovative history, art, and technology.
ROUND 1: Capcom’s Game Chronicle
Visitors will step into Capcom’s legacy with a 16-meter-long animation parade of iconic game characters. This immersive experience lets fans "enter" alongside their favorite characters, setting the tone for the journey ahead.
ROUND 2: Technology × Art × Ideas
This section explores the technical and artistic challenges behind Capcom’s games.
Pixel Art Mastery: Insights into the color constraints of early game design. For example, characters in Mega Man were crafted with vibrant, rich colors while enemy designs shared similar palettes due to hardware limitations.
Creative Secrets: Details like how Mega Man’s face was managed as a separate design element will be unveiled.
ROUND 3: Capcom’s Unique Fantasy Worlds
Capcom’s approach to blending fantasy with realism takes center stage here.
Chun-Li’s Sculpture: A highlight of the exhibition, Chun-Li from Street Fighter will be displayed as a lifelike plaster statue enhanced with projection mapping for a dynamic 3D presentation.
BONUS STAGE: Experience Game Creation
This interactive zone invites visitors to try their hand at pixel art and motion capture. Fans can also explore Capcom’s treasure trove of historical documents, including game design specs and planning documents—80% of which will be on public display for the first time.
When and Where
Dates: March 20 to June 22, 2024
Venue: Osaka Nakanoshima Museum of Art
Makino hopes the exhibition will attract visitors across three generations, offering something for long-time fans and newcomers alike.
