[Ghibli] Netflix to Stream Studio Ghibli's 'Grave of the Fireflies' Worldwide (Excluding Japan and the U.S.)

On August 20th, it was announced that the animated film Grave of the Fireflies (Japanese title: Hotaru no Haka), produced by Studio Ghibli, will be available for exclusive streaming on Netflix in over 190 countries, excluding the United States and Japan, starting on September 16.

Grave of the Fireflies is based on a short story by Akiyuki Nosaka, which won the prestigious Naoki Prize. Directed by Studio Ghibli co-founder Isao Takahata, the film is set in Kobe during the final stages of World War II and portrays the tragic fate of war orphans while capturing the horrors of the time. In its press release, Netflix describes the film as "one of the highest caliber anime works to emerge from Japan."

Currently, Netflix is streaming 22 Studio Ghibli films (excluding the U.S. and Japan). The reason for the exclusion of Japan and the U.S. is due to Netflix not holding the distribution rights for Ghibli films in these regions. In fact, Ghibli films are not available for streaming in Japan on any platform, including Netflix.
