In the final scene of "Mononoke: Karakasa," the Medicine Seller senses a new Mononoke and closes the sliding door with a mysterious expression, signaling the end of the story. Just when it seemed like the end credits would roll, the words "To be continued in Chapter Two: Hinezumi" appeared, surprising fans with the announcement of the sequel.
This reveal was designed to first inform the fans who attended the premiere about the existence of the second chapter. "Mononoke" originally aired in Fuji TV's late-night anime slot "Noitamina" in July 2007. It follows the story of the enigmatic Medicine Seller, who wields a demon-slaying sword capable of cutting Mononoke by discerning their "Truth," "Reason," and "Form." The story depicts the Medicine Seller as he travels across the country, severing the monstrous tragedies born from human hearts and Ayakashi.
The film is set in the opulent and solemnly beautiful world of the women's quarters of the Ōoku, depicting the "female passions" that swirl there and the true nature of the Mononoke that arise.

Comments from Series Creator Kenji Nakamura:
"I designed the 'Mononoke' movie series so that even those who haven't seen the TV version can enjoy it. Each of the two upcoming films will stand alone as complete theater works.
Although the setting of the Ōoku and the Medicine Seller's mission to cut down Mononoke remain consistent, each chapter has its own unique flavor and balance. Regardless of which movie you start with, it will stand alone, but those who have already seen the first chapter will recognize the protagonists of the second and third chapters. Other characters will continue to confront 'strange phenomena.' Furthermore, the trilogy as a whole will tell the story of the Medicine Seller cutting through one large 'passion.' We are fully committed to producing these films, and we hope you will continue to support us. Thank you!"
