Do you know Comiket? Step Into Japan’s Doujin Events with a Comiket Veteran’s Survival Guide

Doujin world is massive, chaotic, and absolutely fascinating.

At Comiket, a wide range of items are sold. Popular genres that draw fans every year include game franchises like Blue Archive, Genshin Impact, and Touhou Project. Recently, anime titles such as Zenless Zone Zero, Bocchi the Rock!, and Uma Musume have also gained strong popularity. Since I enjoy music and games, I purchased many CDs from my favorite artists and several game software titles. Note that cashless payment is not available, so all transactions are made in cash. Bringing change is considered poor etiquette, so prepare plenty of ¥1000 bills and coins in advance.
With so many attendees, every second matters. Being prepared with exact change and paying quickly helps the line move smoothly, ensuring that everyone has a better experience at the event.

Survival First, Buy Second.

In crowded doujinshi markets, you’ll be moving through hot venues in both summer and winter, which quickly saps your stamina. Observing shopping etiquette matters, but above all else, prioritize simply “making it home alive.” In summer, it’s practically an endurance sport.
Due to the limited medical facilities on-site, some collapsed participants were transported not in wheelchairs but on carts, showing how severe heatstroke cases can become. Even in winter, health issues can arise. It’s important to manage your condition starting at least a week before the event and to enjoy the convention within your physical limits.
To avoid collapsing and ruining the event you came for, survival gear—such as heat-countermeasure drinks—is essential. Because you’ll be taking heavy spoils home, make sure to reserve energy for the return trip. Eco bags and suitcases offer ample capacity and reduce strain even when loaded, proving invaluable on the busy journey back.

The takedown

The enjoyable event is finally coming to an end. As closing time approaches, participants begin preparing to leave.
Since many people carrying large bags start moving all at once, the exits become extremely crowded. Therefore, please avoid pushing or running, and walk considerately while giving way to others. The lines can sometimes stretch all the way to the nearest station, and if the congestion worsens, entry restrictions at the station may be enforced. If you are short on time or not comfortable in crowds, it’s best to leave early.
In addition, at some events, volunteers may be recruited to help with cleanup after closing. If you have the time and energy, lending a hand with putting away tables and chairs can be a good option.

Diversity of Doujin Events: Beyond Shopping to Festivals

Doujin events, crowded with passionate fans, often expand beyond simple sales. They feature cosplay, corporate exhibits, and sometimes karaoke contests or festival-style games. Each event reflects its own character, making every visit a unique experience.
Experience Japan's subculture and enjoy wonderful moments with fans.
