A new art project blending anime and tradition

This work is part of the Eva Japonism project, produced by Hanzo Co., Ltd., a publisher of traditional ukiyo-e prints, carrying forward Japanese culture from the Edo period into the present day through a collaboration with the Evangelion series.

Three "Evangelion heroines" are based on the masterpieces of Utamaro, the master of "Bijin-ga".

Inspired by the ukiyo-e master Utamaro’s triptych “Three Beauties with Phoenix,” the piece reimagines Rei, Asuka, and Mari as elegant princesses. Each print playfully incorporates motifs reminiscent of Evangelion units into the folding screens behind the heroines, embodying the wit and charm unique to ukiyo-e.

About the artist

The project is illustrated by Hansan artist Yoshiyuki Ebata, who has designed ukiyo-e for Hanzo and created works such as Future Boy Conan Ukiyo-e, Godzilla Neon Ukiyo-e, and commemorative pieces for Fujiko F. Fujio’s 90th anniversary and GeGeGe Ukiyo-e. He has also collaborated on NFT art projects, including Astro Boy.
