Galaxy Express 999 4K Remastered Version to Hit Theaters for Two-Week Revival
To celebrate the 45th anniversary of the theatrical release, the 4K remastered edition of Galaxy Express 999 will be screened in theaters nationwide for a limited two-week run starting December 13, 2024. This special revival is presented by Toei Animation.
A Timeless Masterpiece Returns
Based on the legendary 1977 manga by Leiji Matsumoto, Galaxy Express 999 became a cultural phenomenon upon its TV anime debut in 1978 and theatrical adaptation in 1979, sparking a massive sci-fi boom in Japan.
Set in a futuristic world where the wealthy transform into immortal machine bodies, the story follows young Tetsuro Hoshino, whose mother is killed by the tyrannical Count Mecha. Tetsuro boards the Galaxy Express 999 with the mysterious Maetel, embarking on a journey across the cosmos to reach a planet offering mechanical bodies. Along the way, they encounter iconic characters like Captain Harlock, Emeraldas, and Tochiro, weaving a tale of adventure, tragedy, and humanity’s eternal search for meaning.
Breathtaking Restoration
The 4K remaster brings Matsumoto’s visionary sci-fi epic to life with the highest-quality visuals and sound. Directed by Rintaro, with character designs by Kazuo Komatsubara, and iconic artwork by Takashi Mukou and Tadao Kubota, the film also features stunning animation contributions from masters like Yoshinori Kanada and Kazuhide Tomonaga.
The theme song, "The Galaxy Express 999" by Godiego, remains a beloved classic, enriching the film’s emotional resonance even decades later.
